The Targaryen Kings; Aegon V, The World of Ice and Fire, Aegon, Brynden and Aemon at the Great Council of 233 AC

Aegon "Egg" Targaryen, Lord Brynden Rivers Bloodraven, Maester Aemon
In 233 AC when king Maekar I died Bloodraven elected to call a Great Council to debate the matter of succession. There was confusion and four possible claimants: Vaella Targaryen, daughter to Prince Daeron, sometimes referred to as Daeron the Drunken, Maegor Targaryen, infant son to the infamous Aerion Brightflame, Aemon Targaryen, third son of the king, but already maester of the Citadel, and finally Aemon Targaryen the fourth son to king Maekar. Bloodraven gave safe-conduct also to another pretender, Aenys Blackfire, fifth son to the Black Dragon Daemon Blackfyre, who came to the Great Council to discuss his claim to the Iron Throne; only to be executed in the Red Keep by the King's Hand as soon as he was arrested by the Gold Cloacks as soon as he arrived in King's Landing. Soon after Aegon the "Prince Who Was An Egg" was chosen by a majority of the Great Council to become King Aegon V.

The first act of Aegon's reign was the arrest of Brynden Rivers. the King's Hand, for the murder of Aenys Blackfyre. Bloodraven did not deny that he had lured the pretender into his power by the offer of a safe conduct, but contended that he had sacrified his own personal honor for the good of the realm.
Though many agreed, and were pleased to see another Blackfyre pretender removed, King Aegon felt he had no choice but to condemn the Hand, lest the word of the Iron Throne be seen as worthless. Yet after the sentence of death was pronounced, Aegon offered Bloodraven the chance to take the black and join the Night's Watch. This he did.
Ser Brynden Rivers set sail for the Wall late in the year of 233 AC. (No one intercepted his ship).
Two hundred men went with him, many of them archers from Bloodraven's personal guard, the Raven's Teeth. The king's brother, Maester Aemon, was also amongst them.
